Community Conversation on Buddhism and Social Change (MSP-O-081819b)

08/18/2019 01:30 PM - 04:30 PM CT

Description

Community Conversation on Buddhism and Social Change with Myoshin Kelley, Edwin Kelley, and Justin Kelley

At the heart of our practice is "practicing for the welfare of all."  And, for many westerners, there is a desire to actively engage the practice in and through social change and justice. Yet, there can be a disconnect between this intention and fully integrating it as lived experience.  During this experiential event, we will explore this topic through the following lenses:

  • The ways Buddhist lineage(s) historically approached collective suffering and how these approaches manifest in today’s world
  • The philosophical underpinnings for these approaches, and how they pertain to our shared experience
  • The ways in which the practices that we already engage in can actively support us in alleviating suffering
  • How we might engage these topics in creative and constructive ways moving forward

Our time together will include: interactive and brainstorming activities, guided meditations, and discussion about the relationship between the practice and the topic of social justice and change from both Buddhist and Western perspectives.

Note: there is a Community Potluck prior to this event from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m., so feel free to come early for social time and food. There will also be an optional social time and snacks from 4:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Registration is not required, but appreciated for planning purposes. Thank you.
